It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to post! Life has been busy and finding time to do everything is always a little challenging (I’m in clinic now – woo!). To celebrate my return to writing posts – I wanted to share the recipe for the breakfast smoothie I have been thoroughly enjoying over the past little while.

Remember hearing that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’? Well it’s true! It’s when your body is craving food after all night of fastingĀ  and can efficiently digest and utilize all the nutrients you take in. It keeps you mentally alert and can actually help you loose weight if that’s what you’re aiming for!

This breakfast smoothie is super quick to make, delicious – and as always, nutritious. It’s easy to take on-the-go for those busy days! Now that berries are coming in season, it’s going to get even better… try it out to get your breakfast and yourself going in the morning!

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana, chopped
  • Handful of berries (about 1/4-1/3 cup)
  • 1 scoop of protein powder
  • 1 tbsp of whole oats
  • 1 tbsp of ground flax
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon
  • Almond milk (your choice of regular or flavored)

Directions:

  • Chop the banana and add to the blender with berries.
  • Add the scoop of protein powder, oats and ground flax.
  • Sprinkle enough cinnamon to lightly coat the ingredients in the blender.
  • Cover with almond milk to bring up to about 2 cups.
  • Blend!

The key to smoothies in the morning is adding that scoop of protein powder to help keep you fuller longer and stabilize your blood sugar throughout the morning. Berries, oats and ground flax are high in fiber and also help to keep you full, as well as regular! The cinnamon adds a nice, warming touch and is also helpful in balancing blood sugar and insulin levels. Almond milk is a great alternative to dairy, as it is just as high in calcium, lower in calories, has omega fatty acids, less sugar and is fortified with extra vitamin goodies!

Enjoy – and stay tuned for more posts on Recipe For Health!
